What Photos Should You Send?

My work requires a clear and well-lit photo of your furry friend to ensure I can get the likeness of your pet as perfectly as possible! I have some good and bad examples below using my own dogs for reference:

Images that are perfect...

  • Good Lighting

These photos have been taken in natural, bright light allowing all of the dog's features to be clearly seen.

  • Clear & Detailed

The finer details of the whiskers, reflections in the eyes, colours of the fur etc., can be clearly seen in these photos and they are crisp, good qualiy.

  • Full-Sized

These images aren't cropped, all of the dog is visible or the cropping is very minimal.

Images that could be better...

  • Poor Lighting

These photos are not well-lit, leaving the details hazy and the overall shape of the dog blurred.

  • Blurry or Low Quality

These photos are examples of images that are blurry or low quality, which means they are missing lots of important details.

  • Poor Crop

These images are too zoomed out or too zoomed in, leaving the details missing or the shape of important features like ears unclear.

Frequently asked questions

What materials do I use?

I'm currently experimenting with papers to look for the best for longevity and the best to work on. Please note the current paper I use is slightly yellow-toned and not pure white.

For pencils, I use a mixture of different pencil brands including: Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran D'ache Luminance, Caran D'ache Pablos, Derwent Lightfast and Derwent Colour Soft coloured pencils. These pencils tend to have good lightfast scores, meaning they should last for years in museum-standard lighting without fading. Though I would advise keep portraits out of direct sunlight!

How long do the portraits take to complete?

Each subject is different as there is so many fur types and colours which have different requirements!

As a reference, my quickest drawing has been completed with around 10 hours over around 4 days, but over several days.

I will let you know an estimated deadline for the piece and give you regular updates on the progress once the deposit has been confirmed.

Can I pay with cash or arrange collection?

Please get in touch to discuss these options if you are local to Northwich, Cheshire, United Kingdom.
